POSITION: Junior Firefighter / Fire Explorer
DUTIES: This is a non-paid, entry-level position. Under the supervision of Advisors, Junior Firefighters assist firefighters in mop up of fires; station and equipment maintenance; participate in drills such as structure, wildland, flammable liquid, and vehicle firefighting techniques; repair and care for hand tools such as shovels, McLeods, pulaskis, axes, drip torches, etc.
Junior Firefighters also assist in public fire education and various community service projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- at least 14 years of age and have completed the 8th grade
- good physical condition
- have and maintain a “C” average or above
- parents and/or guardians consent
INITIAL TRAINING:
Following appointment, Junior Firefighters will be placed on a six-month probationary status. During their probationary period they will receive the following training:
- Department policies and procedures
- use of protective equipment
- use and care of apparatus and equipment
- first aid and CPR
ATTENDANCE:
The Vacaville Fire Protection District Junior Fire Department holds a meeting on the first Tuesday and a drill on the third Tuesday of each month, beginning at 7 p.m. Attendance is mandatory for all drills and excuses will be considered for those members who work or are ill. The reason shall be given to your Lieutenant as soon as possible (no more than one week after the drill missed) for consideration as a legitimate excuse.
If any member has two unexcused absences, that member will be brought before the Advisors for counseling and upon determination of reason for the member’s absence, member will be put on probation or dismissed. Any member on probation shall be required to adhere to all rules and regulations of the Department for 12 months from date of probation. If any member on probation fails to meet these standards, that member will be brought back before the Advisors for that member’s explanation before any action is taken. Any member who has more than two probations in his/her file within a five-year period will constitute an automatic dismissal.
